I do have some actual samples though, if disconnected and shambolic, I believe in simple, fast design - content rather than form, though good form enhances content - poor form can completely destroy good content (since no-one looks at it).
Speed of access is changing that though, but there will always be machines that are under heavy network load or under-resourced, the target audience you want to appeal to will effect your choices here too.
